Grades 6-7 (quarter)
This course provides an introduction to robotics for students with no programming background using LEGO MINDSTORMS EV3 kits. Students will learn to construct, control and program these robots through investigative and exploration activities. Research projects will expose the students to the engineering process.
COMPUTER SCIENCE DISCOVERIES 1
Grade 6-8 (semester)
The first semester of CS Discoveries introduces students to computer science as a vehicle for problem solving, communication, and personal expression. As a whole, this semester focuses on the visible aspects of computing and computer science, encouraging students to see where computer science exists around them and how they can engage with it as a tool for exploration and expression.
COMPUTER SCIENCE DISCOVERIES 2
Grade 7-8 (semester)
Where the first semester centers on the immediately observable and personally applicable elements of computer science, the second semester asks students to look outward and explore the impact of computer science on society. Students will see how a thorough user-centered design process produces a better application, how their personal data is collected and used on the web, and they will work with bare circuit boards to see how computers collect input and return output in a variety of ways. Through the entirety of this semester, student groups will continue to iterate on and refine a mobile app that integrates everything they’ve learned throughout the course into one capstone project.
INTRODUCTION TO COMPUTER SCIENCE
Grade 8 (year) (High School Credit)
Foundations of computer science through exploration of human computer interaction, game design, computer programming, and data modeling. Teaches students the computational practices of algorithm design, problem solving, and programming within a context that is relevant to their lives. (Students and Parents may request this course to count for high school credit.)
Grade 6 (quarter)
Students will learn essential skills in Keyboarding, Google Suite (cloud computing), and effective use of Internet resources. In addition, digital citizenship and literacy fundamentals are explored.
COMPUTER AIDED DRAFTING AND DESIGN (CADD)
Grade 7-8 (semester)
Students learn and apply fundamentals of various drafting and design software applications (such as SketchUp and AutoCAD). This course introduces students to the principles of engineering design and drafting using science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). Students will gain a basic understanding of design, layout and CAD (Computer Aided Drafting) used in mechanical engineering, architectural engineering and manufacturing technology.
Innovation Design Engineering Applications (IDEA)
Grade 6-8 (quarter/semester)
A hands‐on learning space in which tools and technology are utilized to solve real problems. Students take ideas from concept to reality, learning the design and build process. Students will explore careers and design real projects in areas such as architecture, inventions, alternative energy, graphic arts/design, robotics, engineering, CAD, micro‐electronics, woodshop or any of a dozen other fields of interest. Students will learn to lead, follow instructions, cooperate with others, and work effectively in a team to carry out real-world design and engineering tasks.
PRODUCTION AND BROADCASTING
Grade 7-8 (semester)
Careers in audio and video technology and production span all aspects of the audio/video communications industry. Within this context, in addition to developing technical knowledge and skills needed for success in the Arts, Audio/Video Technology, and Communications career cluster, students will be expected to develop an understanding of the industry with a focus on pre production, production, and post-production audio and video activities.
It will be important to have Internet Service in your home so that your child can easily access all class resources on our Learning Management System (LMS) using their school-issued Chromebook.
